About Us
The Alternative Education Centre (AEC) is an Alternative Provision set on a farm in two barns converted into workshops just outside Churchstanton on the beautiful Blackdown hills. Our peaceful, practical setting gives young people the chance to learn new skills and rebuild confidence away from the pressures of a traditional school environment.
Who We Support
Most of our learners are aged 13–17 though we occasionally work with younger or older learners. They are referred by a variety of schools, provisions, and local authorities across Somerset, Devon, Wiltshire, Dorset and beyond, typically attending one day per week. Each student works one-to-one with an educational practitioner, giving them space to focus on their own interests and needs.
We support young people with a wide range of needs, including autism, ADHD, sensory issues, brain injuries, learning difficulties, behavioural concerns, and mental health challenges. Many have had difficult experiences in education before joining us.
Our Approach
At the AEC, we don’t use rigid timetables. Instead, we take a flexible, student-focused approach, adapting to each learner’s style and pace. Our team models respect, and fairness, creating a positive, friendly environment where boundaries are clear and students feel safe.
Through our RESPECT Programme and personalised learning plans, we help students build emotional resilience, develop coping strategies, and form positive relationships. We aim to challenge negative self-perceptions and encourage young people to see their potential. Above all, we believe no student should feel rejected from education, and we are committed to giving every learner the chance to move forward.
Students are expected to arrive at 9am – 2pm and show a good level of attendance.
Outcomes
Many of our older learners go on to college, apprenticeships, or employment. Others reintegrate back in to mainstream education, sometimes with us supporting alongside whilst they attend, just as importantly, they leave us with greater confidence, stronger social skills, and the resilience to face future challenges.
