THE FRAMEWORK

You may or may not have heard that Somerset County Council have been working hard on a new framework for alternative provision. The aim is to create an approved list of providers who have been checked and recognised as able to deliver high-quality alternative education.

We’re really pleased to say that The AEC has now been approved, following a thorough review of our provision and practices. You’ll see us appear on the official list very soon.

The process has been detailed and in-depth (as it should be), and now that the framework is in place the council will be carrying out regular quality-assurance visits to all providers. This is a really positive step for learners, helping to make sure that every setting continues to offer a safe, supportive and engaging experience.

WHAT ELSE IS NEW?

For us, day to day life carries on as normal and it’s been a great start to the year. We’ve welcomed lots of new young people to the centre, introduced them to the way we work, and got them stuck into the wide range of trade skills we offer (which continues to grow all the time).

This year has really seen our Multi-Skills area come to life. We’re seeing a particular increase in learners trying their hand at plastering and rendering, and the standard has been genuinely impressive. Some of the plastering has been so good that if the work had been done on my own house, I wouldn’t have a single complaint.

It’s also been fantastic to see how many young people want to get involved in the motorvehicle side of things since we installed the ramp over the summer (and since Alex joined the team to run the area). He’s been working hard to find project cars that will spark interest and give learners a real sense of achievement as they restore them.

I will aim to put out some more regular updates so please check back in with us soon.
